Prediction: SF 27, NYG 17 (Line: SF by 4.5)

UPDATE: Rashad Jennings is probable to play after limited practices all week. Jennings himself says he is ready for a full workload even though earlier in the week HC Tom Coughlin said he wasn’t planning on bringing him back to a full load in the first game. I am updating the projections assuming that Jennings will take the majority of carries and Andre Williams will return to just being a relief back.

The 5-4 49ers bring their 3-2 road record to face the 3-6 Giants who are on a four game losing streak. The 49er struggle the most when faced with a top defense – that is not the case this week.

QB Colin Kaepernick 30 240,1
RB Reggie Bush
RB Carlos Hyde 30,1 1-10
WR Anquan Boldin 6-90,1
PK Phil Dawson 2 FG 2 XP

Pregame Notes: The 49ers are quickly falling out of contention at 5-4 and still have to play the Seahawks twice and the Cardinals once. The offense has never come together as expected and the defense is not quite as good as it once was. Winning games that are within reach have to happen like this week but until the offense really shows that it can hit a higher gear in the passing attack, the 49ers may be lucky to end up at .500.

QUARTERBACK : While Colin Kaepernick scored in every game this year but he only managed one touchdown in six of nine games and his role as a runner has greatly declined including never scoring a rushing touchdown this year. He’s posted 13 touchdowns against only five interceptions but in recent weeks lost three fumbles and was sacked 18 times over just the last three games played.

RUNNING BACK : For a team that relies on a credible ground attack, the 49ers have declined to having one of the least productive units in the NFL. Frank Gore scored for only the third time this year when he ran for 81 yards in New Orleans last week. He had been limited to less than 50 yards in the three previous tilts and even worse is that he’s been much worse in road games. He’s averaged 85 yards when at home and only 43 yards in away venues. Carlos Hyde scored last week but his yardage is never more than around 25 yards per game as the relief player. Combined these backs only scored six times this year and both have almost no role as a receiver.

WIDE RECEIVER : Anquan Boldin came to life over the last month with a score and 90 yards in three of the last four games. Michael Crabtree has just one touchdown in the last six games and never more than 62 yards. This is hard to read too because Stevie Johnson is mixed in and has scored three times this year but almost never has any appreciable yardage. The only reliable part of the wideouts – at least for now – is Boldin having a productive month.

TIGHT END : No fantasy value. I am serious. Vernon Davis has averaged 21 yards per game since the season opener and never scored. He’s never had over three catches and usually just two. “The Freak” has turned into “The Meek”.

MATCH TO THE DEFENSE: This is where the 49ers offense should be getting help. The Giants defense is one of the worst in the league and allowed multiple touchdowns to most opposing quarterbacks plus three of those actually ran in a score – something that Kaepernick has been missing. The Giants rush defense was just plowed under by Marshawn Lynch scoring four times and running for 140 yards on them. They have already allowed four 100 rushing yard games and 13 rushing touchdowns. Their weakness versus tight ends cannot be extrapolated to Vernon Davis as nothing seems to change his mediocre fortunes this year. Have to like Gore and even Hyde as a flex in this game against such a bad defense. Kaepernick and Boldin can be considered but there is risk with them even in such a tasty matchup.

RB Rashad Jennings 50 2-20
RB Bobby Rainey 30 4-40
RB Shane Vereen 30 5-30,1
RB Andre Williams 20 1-10
WR Odell Beckham 5-80,1
WR Hakeem Nicks 3-40
TE Larry Donnell 5-50
PK Josh Brown 1 FG 2 XP

Pregame Notes: The Giants stumble along on their four game losing streak and their schedule has been brutal for a team that lost their best receiver and running back and numerous other linemen or defenders. The only remaining soft spot on the schedule are the Jags and Redskins but there is certainly no guarantee even those would be wins. The defense has allowed at least 27 points in the last four games and this offense cannot hope to keep pace.

QUARTERBACK : Eli Manning turned in a few bad games but they happened in road venues and at home he is through for multiple touchdowns in every game even if it is during trash time in the fourth quarter and means nothing. In fantasy football, it means a lot. Life without Victor Cruz is the new reality and Manning has experienced nice progress using Odell Beckham in his place. The NFL value may be shot for the Giants, but at least Manning is supporting the fantasy world.

RUNNING BACK : Rashad Jennings has been out since week five with an MCL injury but may return soon. HC Tom Coughlin would not confirm his availability this week so I will assume he remains out and update if news from practices changes his status. In his place, the rookie Andre Williams did score in the last two games but has been held under 60 total yards in every game. The job is all Jennings whenever he can return.

WIDE RECEIVER : Odell Beckham did not play until week five but he has been worth the wait. Taking over for Cruz, the rookie has three touchdowns on the season and topped 100 yards in both of the most recent two games. Rueben Randle offers up just marginal yardage each week and Preston Parker too often ends with just one catch. But Beckham has been a spark for the offense and currently the only offensive player who has stepped up and made any difference. Beckham just caught seven passes for 108 yards – with Richard Sherman often draped on him.

TIGHT END : Larry Donnell was a factor for the first month of the season but since has just one score and only one game where he gained more than 25 yards.

MATCH TO THE DEFENSE: The 49ers are good against the run which means Andre Williams remains on the fantasy bench this week unless you are desperate. But they have allowed high yardage and even up to four touchdowns to opposing quarterbacks. Manning doesn’t have nearly as much to work with as say his brother did, but could end up with moderate to good yardage and two scores if only thanks to trash time. That makes Manning a moderate play this week and Beckham is the only receiver of any note on this team. And for now – he is a must start.
