Daily Sleepers and Value Plays: Week 4

Kyle Holmes, @kylepholmes

One of the most frustrating parts of DFS is not being able to fit all of your star players under the designated salary. Each week The Huddle will look at several value picks and sleepers at each position that could help you free up some valuable cap space for the studs you want to play.

DEREK CARR, QB, RAIDERS

Cost Cap Percent #1’s Cap Percent
FanDuel $7000 11.6% 15.3%
DraftKings $5300 10.6% 15.8%
FantasyScore $6300 12.6% 17.8%

While Aaron Rodgers certainly warrants his current price tag of between 15-18% of your salary, Carr has been nothing short of impressive the past two weeks. He heads to Chicago to take on a Bears defense that has struggled tremendously this season, letting Rodgers, Carson Palmer and Russell Wilson put up some very solid numbers. After a week of bargain bin sales, the Bears defense has done anything but improve. Carr has only thrown one interception so far this season, and will look to put up some more impressive numbers come Sunday.

BLAKE BORTLES, QB, JAGUARS

Cost Cap Percent #1’s Cap Percent
FanDuel $6800 11.3% 15.3%
DraftKings $5100 10.2% 15.8%
FantasyScore $4700 9.4% 17.8%

Bortles will never blow your hair back, but as of right now he is throwing heck of a lot. With Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson growing into their roles, the Jaguars running game continuing to struggle, and the Colts’ defense giving up a lot through the air, Bortles is poised for another decent outing on Sunday. It’s hard to imagine the Colts dropping another game at home, but the Jaguars playing from behind is a best case scenario for Bortles owners anyways. If you’re a believer, spend 9-11% of your salary on Bortles and fill the rest of your team out with some more… dependable… talent.

Other Quarterback Considerations

Michael Vick is clocking in around 10% of salary cost, but there’s just no telling what he’ll do on Thursday night. He couldn’t have stepped into a better situation with Bell and Brown playing at the top of their games, but Baltimore is 0-3 and it’s hard to imagine they allow a backup QB drop them to 0-4. Crazier things have happened with the Pittsburgh/Baltimore rivalry however - Vick could be on track for a surprisingly good outing on Thursday.

KARLOS WILLIAMS, RB, BUF

Cost Cap Percent #1’s Cap Percent
FanDuel $6300 10.5% 15%
DraftKings $3400 6.8% 15.6%
FantasyScore $5400 10.8% 16.4%

Williams has scored at least a touchdown in every game this season playing behind Shady McCoy. With McCoy likely to miss Sunday’s game, this is a no-brainer – especially in Draft Kings where he isn’t even hitting 7% of salary. The Giants are 2nd vs. the run, but that shouldn’t slow down Williams in Rex Ryan’s run-committed offense. The Huddle has him ranked 2nd for PPR RBs this week, and it would be wise to roll with him in at least one tournament style league.

DUKE JOHNSON, RB, BROWNS

Cost Cap Percent #1’s Cap Percent
FanDuel $5400 9% 15%
DraftKings $3100 6.2% 15.6%
FantasyScore $2400 4.8% 16.4%

Johnson’s carries have varied so far this season (7, 12, 4) but he’s coming off a week where he logged six receptions in the Browns’ two minute offense. This week he’ll be facing a Charger defense that was gashed by Adrian Peterson last week and will look to rebound. Whether Johnson gets running early on the Bolts and puts up numbers on the ground, or the Bolts take an early lead and force the Browns to come from behind, Johnson should be in for some decent numbers at under 9% of your salary. Draft Kings and Fantasy Score leagues especially should look his way for a great bargain.

Other Running Back Considerations

Lance Dunbar was on our radar last week and he didn’t disappoint, logging 10 receptions for 100 yards. Brandon Weeden struggled to look downfield and Dunbar owners benefitted tremendously. The Saints will look to take the Cowboys through the air this week, and Dunbar should be another great bargain bin addition to your DFS squad.

DONTE MONCRIEF, WR, COLTS

Cost Cap Percent #1’s Cap Percent
FanDuel $6300 10.5% 15.6%
DraftKings $5000 10% 18.6%
FantasyScore $5100 10.2% 17.8%

Moncrief and Hilton led the Colts in targets last week, and luckily Moncrief came away with the TD. At 10% in almost every format, Moncrief is a great low end WR2 that can put up WR1 numbers. The Colts are playing at home and are desperate for a statement win that will stop the noise and quiet the crowd regarding Andrew Luck; there’s no better place to get that done then at home against the division rival Jaguars. The Jags are 24th vs. the pass, and Moncrief should get plenty thrown his way.

MARVIN JONES, WR, BENGALS

Cost Cap Percent #1’s Cap Percent
FanDuel $5500 9.1% 15.6%
DraftKings $3800 7.6% 18.6%
FantasyScore $3800 7.6% 17.8%

While the Bengals admittedly took to the air more than usual last week in their 4th quarter storm back against the Ravens, Marvin Jones has become a consistent target for Andy Dalton. The Chiefs have allowed more fantasy points to receivers than any other team this year, and coming off of a short week where Randall Cobb and James Jones had their way with them, this week shouldn’t be any different. Coming in at 7.6% in Draft Kings and Fantasy Score leagues, Jones is a great option for WR.

STEVIE JOHNSON, WR, CHARGERS

Cost Cap Percent #1’s Cap Percent
FanDuel $5800 9.6% 15.6%
DraftKings $4400 8.8% 18.6%
FantasyScore $4300 8.6% 17.8%

He’s been on our list before and he’s back again this week! After the Raiders torched the Browns through the air, it’s time for the Chargers to have a crack at it. While Johnson had a quiet week last week against the Vikings stout defense, he still managed 5 targets, down just 1 from his previous games where Rivers threw six passes a game in his direction. 8.6%-9.6% of your salary will get you at least 5 catches for 75 yards and hopefully a TD this week as the Chargers look to get back on track.

MARTELLUS BENNETT, TE, BEARS

Cost Cap Percent #1’s Cap Percent
FanDuel $5500 9.1% 11%
DraftKings $4500 9% 12%
FantasyScore $6400 12.8% 14.6%

While Bennett is by no means a sleeper, he is the far and away #1 TE this week, and he hasn’t been priced as such. He finds himself ranked at 5th (Draft Kings), tied for 8th (FanDuel), and 5th at Fantasy Score, but he’s still got 2% savings over Jimmy Graham. While the Raiders have looked good the last two weeks, one thing has remained constant – they simply cannot find a way to stop TEs from accumulating points on them. Eifert, Gilmore and Barnidge all had fantastic outings against the Silver and Black, and now it looks like Bennett’s time has arrived; it’s looking more and more like Cutler and Jeffery will make their way back into this week’s lineup, and if they do it means only good things for Bennett’s production.

Other Tight End Considerations

With Gilmore looking like he will miss Thursday night’s game against the Steelers, second round rookie Maxx Williams will have a chance to show the Ravens what he can do. He costs near the base rate for most TEs and is definitely worth a flier if you’re trying to find a TE with upside for cheap.
