Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is 'way ahead of schedule' in his development, according to one of his coaches.

Huddle Up: The Chiefs put their faith in Mahomes when they dealt Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins this week. Mahomes has a huge arm, and he'll be a QB2 in 2018 with tons of upside, especially in keeper formats.

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce said that he knows QB Patrick Mahomes is 'ready for the opportunity' and that the club can 'without a doubt' win a championship with Mahomes under center. 'He can throw the ball any way, he can throw it off his back foot and he can jump and throw, he can throw the ball anywhere, any way you need for it to be thrown,' Kelce added. 'His confidence is definitely one of the best attributes to his game.'

Huddle Up: One of the biggest transitions in all of football next season will see how the Chiefs fare moving on from Alex Smith to Mahomes, their 2017 first-round pick whom they drafted out of Texas Tech. The 22-year-old received one start in his rookie campaign -- a meaningless Week 17 tilt in Denver -- and didn't disappoint, racking up 284 yards on 62.9 percent passing. While his ceiling is high, he'll begin the season as more of an option for two-quarterback formats.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is expected to enter the 2018 season as the starter with the trade of QB Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins.

Huddle Up: Mahomes has a big arm, and the combination of him and Tyreek Hill is tantalizing. He'll be a QB2 in fantasy with some upside.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced QB Patrick Mahomes will make his first career start in Week 17 against the Denver Broncos.

Huddle Up: It's a smart move by the Chiefs, who are locked into the fourth seed in the AFC and have nothing to gain by rolling out Alex Smith. The rookie is blessed with the rocket arm and has drawn both good and bad comparisons to Brett Favre, but he's in for a tough first start against a revitalized Denver defense. He's a QB2 at best in Week 17.

The Kansas City Chiefs are still planning to have QB Patrick Mahomes take a 'redshirt season' this year, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, although the idea of him making an appearance in a game has not been taken off the table.

Huddle Up: Mahomes is running the scout team in practice and hasn't run the team's plays at full speed since the fourth week of the preseason, so starting QB Alex Smith doesn't appear to be in imminent danger of losing his job. Mahomes only has fantasy value in dynasty and keeper leagues at this point.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes went 10-for-14 for 88 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals Saturday, Aug. 19.

Huddle Up: Mahomes will not an option in standard leagues this season but will be valuable in keeper leagues since he should be the quarterback of the future for the Chiefs.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes said he studied his playbook all night when he received it Friday, May 5, and head coach Andy Reid said the toughest part of Mahomes' transition to the NFL will be 'getting the verbiage down and the formations' for the offense.

Huddle Up: Mahomes has all the arm talent in the world, and being tutored by Reid should boost his development. He won't have value in redraft leagues this year, but he is an excellent stash candidate in keeper leagues. Mahomes could end up being the best fantasy quarterback to come out of this class.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was being targeted by the New Orleans Saints with the 11th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Huddle Up: The Chiefs moved up and grabbed Mahomes, who will now be groomed by Andy Reid. He won't have fantasy value in redraft leagues in 2017, but he has tons of arm talent and QB1 upside. Stash him in keeper formats.

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday, April 27.

Huddle Up: Mahomes should sit on the bench for a few years since he played in a spread offense during college and needs to learn an NFL offense. He will not have much value in most standard leagues but should be an option in keeper leagues because he has a chance to be a No. 1 fantasy quarterback in the future.
