San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams (ankle) will be placed on season-ending Reserve/Injured with ankle injury, according to a source, Saturday, Sept. 2.

Huddle Up: Williams was a late-round flier for owners trying to capitalize on Carlos Hyde's durability issues. He can be removed from all single-year cheat sheets.

San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams has been playing better of late, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. 'So I thought he's put two good practices in a row,' Shanahan said Friday. Aug. 4. 'It takes time with some of these guys.'

Huddle Up: Williams will likely open the year as the backup to Carlos Hyde, but with questions about how well Hyde fits Shanahan's system, Williams is worth grabbing as a RB5.

San Francisco 49ers rookie RB Joe Williams has gotten off to a slow start in his first training camp, presumably because he is still getting familiarity with head coach Kyle Shanahan's offensive system. He also has to do a better job with ball security, according to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

Huddle Up: Williams was a fourth-round pick this spring who was seen as a serious challenger for the starting job, primarily because it was well-documented he was handpicked by Shanahan and highly regarded running backs coach Bobby Turner. It sounds as if he is going through a typical rookie struggles, but his slow start has allowed Carlos Hyde and Tim Hightower to get a better grasp on the first two spots on the depth chart, making Williams little more than a late-round fantasy investment at this point.

San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams has 'put himself into a position to compete for a significant role' heading into training camp, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

Huddle Up: Williams was handpicked by head coach Kyle Shanahan, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him pass Carlos Hyde on the depth chart or at least split carries. Williams could be a steal as a second-round pick in rookie drafts, and he has enough upside to grab as a RB4 in redraft leagues.
