New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (concussion) is officially active for the team's Week 2 game.

Huddle Up: Burkhead should receive most of the carries in the game and probably will also be involved in the passing game. He will be facing a tough Jacksonville Jaguars defensive but can still be a No. 2 running back or flex option.

  • Posted: 9/15/2018 3:19pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (concussion) progressed this week and made the trip for Week 2, according to a source.

Huddle Up: It's encouraging, but he's not out of the woods yet. Burkhead will have to show that he's good to go in pre-game warmups tomorrow. If he does play he may not see his usual allotment of touches, but he would pose as an RB3 threat.

  • Posted: 9/14/2018 9:54am ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (concussion) participated in his second straight day of practice Friday, Sept. 14.

Huddle Up: Burkhead, of course, still has to clear the concussion protocol, and even if so, he also could be competing with the likes of James White and rookie Sony Michel for touches Sunday in a tough matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. That said, he's a solid flex option if active.

  • Posted: 9/13/2018 2:28pm ET

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (concussion) was officially listed as limited during practice Thursday, Sept. 13.

Huddle Up: Burkhead needs to pass his concussion tests before he is cleared to play, so owners will need to check on his status over the next few days. He has been receiving most of the work at running back this season and can be a No. 2 running back or flex option if he is able to play in Week 2.

  • Posted: 9/13/2018 10:41am ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (concussion) was in full pads but did not take part in the limited positional drills the media was able to observe at practice Thursday, Sept. 13.

Huddle Up: It's a good step for Burkhead who sat out Wednesday entirely, but he still has a ways to go, including clearing the concussion protocol. If he plays Sunday, he's a solid flex consideration against a tough Jacksonville Jaguars D.

  • Posted: 9/12/2018 1:47pm ET

New England Patriots RBs Rex Burkhead (concussion) was not able to practice Wednesday, Sept. 12, and RB Sony Michel (knee) was limited.

Huddle Up: It's looking like there could be another heavy dose of James White, who led the Patriots in targets a week ago. White is a fine backup plan for those who were counting on Burkhead and/or Michel this week. It's a tough matchup in the Jacksonville Jaguars, but White has RB2 to RB3 PPR upside.

  • Posted: 9/9/2018 6:33pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead rushed 18 times for 64 yards in the Week 1 win against the Houston Texans and he added one reception for five yards on three targets.

Huddle Up: Burkhead led the backfield with 19 total touches, compared to five for Jeremy Hill and nine for James White. As such, Burkhead is a solid RB3 or flex fantasy option in most fantasy formats. He faces a tough matchup on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2, however.

  • Posted: 9/6/2018 6:52am ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) is cleared to play in Week 1, but he's expected to be eased into the mix.

Huddle Up: Burkhead is a flex option against the Houston Texans, but he might not be worth starting outside of PPR formats this week.

  • Posted: 9/4/2018 7:36pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) hasn't missed a practice in three consecutive weeks, suggesting he is either making progress from a slight tear in his knee and will be able to play a full complement of snaps in Week 1 against the Houston Texans.

Huddle Up: The Athletic's Jeff Howe suggested in late August that Burkhead was being held out of the game action during the preseason because the Patriots were being "overcautious" with a player they expect to be an "offensive focal point." That remains to be seen given the usual tricks New England likes to play with fantasy owners, but it might be a necessity to rely on players like Burkhead this season given the lack of proven talent the team has at receiver. Burkhead is a fine low-end RB2/flex play for the opener.

  • Posted: 8/24/2018 1:56pm ET

New England Patriots RBs Rex Burkhead (knee) and Sony Michel (knee) are not expected to play in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 24.

Huddle Up: Burkhead recently returned to practice and appears to be on track for Week 1, while Michel's status for the opener is uncertain at this point. Both players should see a solid amount of touches in 2018. Burkhead can be a No. 2 running back or flex option in most leagues, while Michel could also be a flex option for owners.

  • Posted: 8/19/2018 12:53pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) is participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 19.

Huddle Up: Burkhead is on track to be the starting running back for the Patriots this season. He should be involved in the running and passing game, which can make him a No. 2 or No. 3 running back in most leagues.

  • Posted: 8/16/2018 10:40pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) is reportedly dealing with a slight tear in his knee, but it has been deemed a minor injury and something he will be able to play through, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic.

Huddle Up: At least now we have an answer to what the 'undisclosed' injury is that has sidelined Burkhead recently. Because it's the preseason, the Patriots have absolutely no reason to push things with the running back who is considered the current favorite to lead the backfield and touches. While a tear of any kind in a running back's knee cannot be considered a good thing, the fact he has been cleared to play means owners can probably continue to draft him as a RB3 this month.

  • Posted: 8/16/2018 5:36pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (undisclosed) is dealing with a minor injury but could have played in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 16, if it was a regular season game, according to a source.

Huddle Up: Burkhead probably will return to the field in the near future as long as he does not suffer any setbacks. He will be part of a committee at running back this season and may lead the team in carries. He can be considered a No. 2 running back or flex option in most leagues.

  • Posted: 8/13/2018 8:54am ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (undisclosed) is out of practice Monday, Aug. 13.

Huddle Up: Burkhead figures to lead the backfield committee and is a low-end RB2 or a high-end RB3. So keep tabs on the situation.

  • Posted: 8/8/2018 2:51pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (undisclosed) headed to the team's lower field at practice Wednesday, Aug. 8, a field usually reserved for those rehabbing injuries.

Huddle Up: Burkhead has been a full participant so far during training camp, but he might be dealing with some type of nagging injury. Barring any setbacks, he has the chance to open as the team's No. 1 option in the backfield. However, with James White, Jeremy Hill and rookie Sony Michel, among others, he should still be viewed as more of a low-end RB2 or flex player in most leagues at this point.

  • Posted: 8/5/2018 4:02pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead has been working out as a punt returner during early part of training camp. Burkhead has not returned a punt since college.

Huddle Up: Burkhead is in line to be the starting running back for the Patriots, so he probably will not be the top option to return punts. He likely will be part of a committee this season but can still be at least a No. 3 running back in all leagues because of his ability to run and catch the ball.

  • Posted: 8/5/2018 12:46pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead appeared ahead of Sony Michel on the team's first depth chart release Sunday, Aug. 5.

Huddle Up: It's unclear if Michel's knee injury basically guaranteed Burkhead's placement on the first team or if his veteran status did the trick. Either way, Burkhead was already expected to play an important role in the offense this season and is the favorite for goal line work. Expect his ADP to skyrocket in the coming weeks, as he is very likely to be a serviceable flex option at worst even when Michel returns.

  • Posted: 7/18/2018 6:34pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead has a good chance to enter the season as the No. 1 option for the team from a traditional running back perspective.

Huddle Up: Burkhead probably will lead the team in carries this season and should also see some work in the passing game. He can be a No. 2 or No. 3 running back in most fantasy leagues if he is the top option at running back.

  • Posted: 3/14/2018 2:04pm ET

Free-agent RB Rex Burkhead (Patriots) is re-signing to a three-year contract with the New England Patriots, according to a source. The deal is heavy on guaranteed money, but financial terms were not disclosed.

Huddle Up: This move isn't a big surprise since the Patriots already lost Dion Lewis to free agency. Burkhead was a jack of all trades for the Patriots in 2017 and figures to be in a similar role this season. He has more upside in PPR formats and should be considered a low-end RB2 to high-end RB3, although injuries are a concern after he missed six games last year.

  • Posted: 1/21/2018 10:53am ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) is officially active for the AFC Championship game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Huddle Up: Burkhead will have a role in the offense against the Jaguars and should be involved in the running and passing game. He can be a flex option for fantasy owners this week.

  • Posted: 1/20/2018 8:55pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) will play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Championship game, according to a source.

Huddle Up: Burkhead has been a utilized as both a runner and receiver when healthy, and he will be worth a look in DFS contests this weekend.

  • Posted: 1/19/2018 1:07pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Jan. 19, and is listed as questionable for the AFC Championship game.

Huddle Up: Burkhead appears to have a decent chance to play in the championship game, but owners will need to check the inactive list for his official status. He would have a role in the rushing and passing game if he plays and could be a flex option in fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 1/18/2018 1:30pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 18.

Huddle Up: Burkhead did not play last week despite practicing, so his status for the AFC Championship game is uncertain at this point. He probably would receive a limited role if he is active for the game but could be a flex option in leagues.

  • Posted: 1/17/2018 1:37pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Huddle Up: Burkhead was one of the most unsung free-agent signings last offseason. After eight total touchdowns and over 500 total yards, he'll be a quality low-end RB2 to high-end RB3 candidate in PPR leagues.

  • Posted: 1/15/2018 5:00am ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) is expected to play in the AFC Championship game Sunday, Jan. 21, against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Huddle Up: The team has a number of injuries at the position, and Burkhead could slot in for some short-yardage work. He's a flex option in playoff formats.

  • Posted: 1/13/2018 7:14am ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) is not expected to play in the team's Divisional Round playoff game against the Tennessee Titans Saturday, Jan. 13.

Huddle Up: Burkhead was listed as questionable on the injury report after being a limited participant in all three practice sessions during the week. Expect RB James White to see additional snaps if Burkhead is held out of the game.

  • Posted: 1/11/2018 1:08pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 11, and is listed as questionable for the Divisional Round playoff game against the Tennessee Titans.

Huddle Up: Burkhead appears to be on track to play against the Titans as long as he does not suffer a setback over the next few days. He would have a role in the passing and running game if he is active and can be at least a flex option in fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 1/10/2018 2:36pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Huddle Up: Burkhead received an extra week to rest his injured knee and appears to have a decent chance to play against the Tennessee Titans. He would be involved in the running and passing game if he plays and can be at least a flex option for fantasy owners.

  • Posted: 1/9/2018 2:30pm ET

New England Patriots RBs Rex Burkhead (knee) and James White (ankle) were limited practice participants Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Huddle Up: Burkhead ran away with the Patriots' touchdown shares as the regular season progressed while White faded into the background. Burkhead is the best play in New England's backfield, but White still has value in PPR formats.

  • Posted: 12/29/2017 2:32pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) did not practice Friday, Dec. 29, and he will miss the Week 17 game against the New York Jets.

Huddle Up: With Mike Gillislee also sidelined, and James White questionable as a limited participant, Dion Lewis should handle a good chunk of the carries with Brandon Bolden also perhaps seeing a larger role.

  • Posted: 12/28/2017 1:19pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 28.

Huddle Up: Burkhead probably will not be ready to play until the playoffs, so owners in all leagues should avoid him. Dion Lewis will continue to be the main running back for the Patriots and can be a No. 2 running back in fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 12/27/2017 3:26pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Dec. 27.

Huddle Up: Burkhead was expected to miss several weeks because of his injury, so he probably will not play against the New York Jets. Dion Lewis will receive most of the work at running back and should be at least a No. 2 running back.

  • Posted: 12/22/2017 1:24pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 22, and has been ruled out for Week 16.

Huddle Up: Dion Lewis should receive most of the work at running back this week, but Mike Gillislee could receive some carries and James White probably will be involved in the passing game. Lewis can be a No. 2 running back in most leagues, while the other two can be flex options.

  • Posted: 12/21/2017 3:35pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 21.

Huddle Up: Dion Lewis, Mike Gillislee and James White should all be involved in the offense while Burkhead is sidelined. Lewis should receive most of the touches at running back and can be a No. 2 running back. Gillislee has a chance to be a No. 2 running back or flex option in standard leagues because of his touchdown potential.

  • Posted: 12/20/2017 3:42pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Dec. 20.

Huddle Up: Burkhead is expected to be sidelined until the playoffs, so owners can avoid him in all leagues. Dion Lewis, Mike Gillislee and James White should all see playing time with Burkhead sidelined. Lewis is probably best fantasy option among the group and can be at least a flex option in leagues. Gillislee has a chance to be a flex option in standard leagues, while White could be a flex option in point-per-reception leagues.

  • Posted: 12/19/2017 6:10am ET

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) was diagnosed with a sprained knee and should return for the playoffs, according to a source.

Huddle Up: Dion Lewis and Mike Gillislee will likely see the bulk of the rushing work, and James White will see action in the passing game. Lewis remains an RB2, but Gillislee and White are risky flex options.

  • Posted: 12/18/2017 6:06am ET

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) is believed to have a sprained knee and a bruise but avoided a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He'll have an MRI Monday, Dec. 18.

Huddle Up: Dion Lewis' stock only gets better, and Mike Gillislee could become a factor again. James White could start to see more carries, too. However, it's anyone's guess which back will be featured any given week. Burkhead's fantasy season is likely over.

  • Posted: 12/17/2017 3:24pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) suffered a left knee injury in the second half of the Week 15 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and he has been declared out for the rest of the game. He had a rushing touchdown before departing.

Huddle Up: With Burkhead on the mend it is Dion Lewis receiving a bulk of the work against the Steelers. Mike Gillislee could also be back in the picture in Week 16 if Burkhead is forced to miss time.

  • Posted: 12/11/2017 9:58pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead had only five carries for eight yards, but did manage a touchdown in the team's Week 14 defeat Monday, Dec. 11, versus the Miami Dolphins. In addition, he recorded five grabs for 45 receiving yards.

Huddle Up: Burkhead was on a bit of a roll entering Week 14 after receiving double-digit carries and logging at least 50 yards on the ground in each of the last two weeks, but none of that happened here. Still, his touchdown and receiving totals made it a useful day at the office. At the end of the day, though, he's a tough-to-trust FLEX option.

  • Posted: 12/3/2017 1:54pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead rushed 12 times for 78 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Week 13 game against the Buffalo Bills. He also had three receptions for 25 yards on four targets.

Huddle Up: Burkhead piled up 103 total scrimmage yards. Not bad. He'll look to carry the momentum into next Monday's road game against the Miami Dolphins. He can be trusted as a low-end RB2 or flex play in most fantasy leagues right now.

  • Posted: 11/26/2017 5:03pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead carried 13 times for 50 yards and a touchdown in the Week 12 game against the Miami Dolphins and he posted two grabs for three yards and a score.

Huddle Up: Burkhead posted a tremendous fantasy line while Dion Lewis topped the century mark in yardage. Despite the big day Burkhead should be treated as more of an RB3 or flex fantasy option in most leagues going into Week 13.

  • Posted: 11/13/2017 5:21am ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead rushed 10 times for 36 yards and caught three passes for 27 yards and a touchdown in Week 10 against the Oakland Raiders.

Huddle Up: The game was a blowout, which may have led to his season-high in rushes. Burkhead isn't used enough on a weekly basis to trust as a flex option.

  • Posted: 10/29/2017 7:04pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead ran four times for 15 yards and caught seven passes for 68 yards in a 21-13 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8.

Huddle Up: It was Burkhead's best effort of the season and the first time he reached double-digit touches. He could be worth a stash in PPR formats, but he will be tough to trust when his role is likely to fluctuate significantly from one game to the next.

  • Posted: 10/23/2017 4:46am ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead, who missed time due to a rib injury, returned in Week 7 and had six rushes for 31 yards. Burkhead also caught his only pass for 11 yards.

Huddle Up: It wasn't a bad return for Burkhead, but he remains a flex option due to the state of flux in New England's crowded backfield.

  • Posted: 10/20/2017 2:57pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (ribs) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 20, and is not on the injury report for Week 7.

Huddle Up: Burkhead likely will be back in uniform after missing several games because of his injury. He will be sharing work with Mike Gillislee, James White and Dion Lewis if they are all active. Owners probably should look for other options to use this week since Burkhead's role is uncertain.

  • Posted: 10/14/2017 12:54pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (ribs) has been ruled out of the team's Week 6 game.

Huddle Up: James White and Dion Lewis should continue to have solid roles on offense with Burkhead sidelined. White can be a flex option in point-per-reception leagues because of his role in the passing game, while Lewis can be a flex option in deeper standard leagues.

  • Posted: 10/13/2017 1:52pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (ribs) was limited during practice Friday, Oct. 13, and is listed as questionable for Week 6.

Huddle Up: Owners will need to check the inactive list to see if Burkhead is able to play against the New York Jets. Burkhead may be limited if he plays because of his injured ribs. Owners probably should consider other options because of Burkhead's uncertain status.

  • Posted: 10/5/2017 7:31pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (ribs) is expected to return against the New York Jets in Week 6, according to a source.

Huddle Up: Burkhead has been sidelined since Week 2, but he had 49 receiving yards and a score in two games before suffering the injury. His role in the New England offense isn't clear, but he is worth a speculative stash in PRR formats in case he emerges as consistent weapon.

  • Posted: 10/4/2017 1:14pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (ribs) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 4, but has been ruled out for Week 5.

Huddle Up: James White and Dion Lewis will continue to see more playing time with Burkhead out. White probably has more fantasy value and can be a flex option in point-per-reception leagues because of his role in the passing game.

  • Posted: 10/2/2017 1:54pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (ribs) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Huddle Up: Burkhead has missed the last two games because of the injury and his status for Week 5 is uncertain at this point. Owners probably should consider other options even if Burkhead is active for the game. James White has been more involved with Burkhead out and could be a flex option in deeper leagues.
