The
following mock draft was conducted considering a standard performance scoring
system and with no players retained for the following season. This mock draft
was conducted by FantasyAuctioneer.com using their online auction software.
The auction assumed 20 man rosters and a $200 salary cap per team with a
starting lineup of QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, PK and DEF. The Auction in last year’s
Fantasy Football Handbook was turned into a best-ball league that was
eventually won by George Del Prado of FantasyAuctioneer.com.
If you use
the auction format, check out the Fantasy Auctioneer at www.fantasyauctioneer.com for a free trial of their robust tool.

What
was your strategy going in and how do you think you did?
I always
try to de-emphasize the QB position while building a deep and balanced team
everywhere else. With this in mind, I was looking to buy one or two of the
RBBCs in the league and was happy to get Chicago’s Jones/Benson and New England’s Dillon/Maroney for $31 each. I’m also happy with getting Vick/Plummer for
$19, but should have spent for a 3rd QB. I paid $3 for a number
of $1 WRs because those still in the money at that point also needed WRs.
Who
were your best/worst deals?
Two
passing offenses I think will take quantum leaps forward this year are the
Giants’ and the Steelers’, so getting Plaxico for $16 and Heath Miller for $3
were my best deals. My worst would have to be Edinger for $1. I forgot
about the Longwell acquisition, so I wasted a spot there.
Aside
from your team, who is the team to beat?
As I said, I’m a big believer in spending little on QBs
while fielding a deep and balanced team; so I like Andy Richardson’s (Fantasy
Index) and Jim Wheelock’s (Coachbox) teams. |
What
was your strategy going in and how do you think you did?
I targeted
and got Brady, Caddy and Portis to build my team around. Wanted to value shop
and did pretty well. I offered up players I thought were over rated or
had injury concerns and they were snapped up.
Who
were your best/worst deals?
Hard to
say, but getting Lendale White and Ron Dayne for a combined $17 could
be steal of the draft. The worse was picking up Priest Holmes.
Hadn't seen the latest that his return was now less than 50%.
Aside
from your team, who is the team to beat?
I like the
value that both Dave Dorey and Tony Finn got during the draft, but in a
best ball format it is hard to tell. Tim at Fantasy Insights would
probably get my vote today.

What
was your strategy going in and how do you think you did?
I
had intended to spend somewhere between $80 and $100 on two running backs and
then wait for the value players with my remaining money. When Manning went to
me for $27 it changed my whole draft. I hadn’t expected him to be available
at that price.
Who
were your best/worst deals?
Obviously
from the previous question, I think Manning at $27 was a good pick but
I actually like Mark Brunell for $1 as probably the best value pick I made. I
paid too much for Steven Jackson but there were very few clear feature backs
left at that point in the draft and I needed to get one. I would say Talented
Mr Roto, assuming Javon Walker returns to form.
Aside
from your team, who is
the team to beat?
I would
say Talented Mr Roto, assuming Javon Walker returns to form. |
What
was your strategy going in and how do you think you did?
I waited
to spend so as to look for value in quantity; this best-ball format demands
roster depth at the key positions so I purposely looked for late deals at RB
and WR. My 3 top RBs (J Jones, Dunn, Droughns) were 16th, 22nd (in a 3-way tie), and 30th in salary rank among RBs. WRs Harrison
and Ward were ranked 7th and 12th in salary so I was
able to save money for later #1-caliber WRs, getting Wilford, Muhammad, and
Bryant for $21 combined.
Who
were your best/worst deals?
Droughns
for $14 was a steal; he ranked around #10 among RBs in many scoring formats
last year but was only the 30th highest salary in this auction. I
probably overpaid for Barber, who at $10 was among the highest priced
handcuff players in the auction.
Aside
from your team, who is
the team to beat?
Tim Van
Prooyen’s team has the depth I admire with nice depth at all positions, but especially
at WR since the league starts 3 and allows for no transactions from auction
to championship. And, as always, auctioneer George del Prado has assembled a
formidable team. |

What
was your strategy going in and how do you think you did?
I wanted to come out of the draft with three solid
starters at RB, a top WR or two with good depth behind them, and top-10
starters everywhere else. Prices got a little out of whack on some of the RBs
I was targeting, but I ended up with 3 of our top 15 there and 3 of our top
20 WRs, so I'm relatively pleased with how things worked out.
Who
were your best/worst deals?
The best value was Bush, who we'd priced about $10
higher. He may not be a starter, but I have no doubt he'll play a lot and put
up better numbers than any of the other backs who went in his price range.
Strictly off our numbers I overpaid slightly for Rudi Johnson, but it was the
only way to land a top-10 RB in this auction, and I managed to grab Chris
Perry later to protect the pick.
Aside
from your team, who is the team to beat?
Not surprising considering he outbid me on several
players I wanted, I like FantasyGuru's team. He might be a little thin at
wideout but he looks strong everywhere else. I thought GroganSports did a
great job of building a pretty solid team even while spending big on Larry
Johnson. |
What
was your strategy going in and how do you think you did?
As always,
in auction drafts, I work with a budget because spending too much on one
player will strap you later on. I think I overspent on a couple, but
got a few steals.
Who were your best/worst deals?
My best
deals have to be Kevin Jones and Chester Taylor for a combined 38 bucks, and
Gonzalez for 13. Worst would be Koren Robinson - an "oops"
hit of the bid button to be honest.
Aside from your team, who is the team to beat?
Gridiron
Grumblings and FootballDiehards, both tough rosters. |

What
was your strategy going in and how do you think you did?
An auction style draft affords
the opportunity to draft anyone you want, as long as you have the cap
money. It can lead to a big disparity in team strength. Some believe
that team depth is most important. I disagree. Good players sitting on your
bench don't score any points. That said, I wanted to draft at least
one impact player at the QB, RB and WR positions. In turn, I
wanted to land some solid (maybe undervalued) players to complete my
lineup.
Who were
your best/worst deals?
Both are probably found at the QB position. I really did not want
David Carr for any price, but ended up drafting him for $5 as a back-up.
While I did not overpay for him, he's just not a good option. Right
after drafting Carr, I was able to land McNair for $2. Many fear
McNair's situation, but he could be a steal when he solidifies a starting
job
Aside from
your team, who is the team to beat?
Actually, George Del Prado
has a very solid squad even though he picked two kickers who may not to play
this year. A simple faux pas that could be fixed via free agency. Did
well to get the backfield for New England and Chicago. |
What
was your strategy going in and how do you think you did?
Draft strategy is difficult to plan or outline; like most
drafts be it auction or serpentine - fantasy leaguers must get a feel for the
owners that are participating and make an attempt to bid on players that
offer value. In a best ball format, balance and depth across the board offers
the best chance of seasoning ending success.
Who were your best/worst deals?
DeShaun Foster [24] and Duante Culpepper [8] were my best
buys; while I spend too much on Dominic Rhodes [15].
