My article Planning Your First Two Draft Picks is always popular and it is so detailed that it cannot be kept current with every change and it deals with just the most common league size for the first two picks. But I get so many requests to do different sized leagues and another round deeper that I wanted to help in some way. This is a listing using the current Huddle rankings and what we suggest at each pick. A few players will still move around like Arian Foster who has been all over the first and second round so far. The names are less important than the positions because each draft slot will have its own unique situation. Certainly your league won’t pick all the players in my order anyway. I offer this late hour response to you, my esteemed and treasured Huddler.
If you think this is helpful and would like to see it again next year, drop me a tweet at @DMDorey.
Performance League – 1/10 rush and receive yards, 1/20 pass yards, TD = 6 except pass = 4
Reception Point League – Same as Performance but with one point per reception
QB Heavy League – Assumes QBs are significantly more valuable than other positions and/or you can start two of them.
12 Team leagues call for the most balanced approach since the drain on talent in drafts means you have to approach it carefully or you end up with weaknesses in some positions. It is the most common but only barely over 10 team leagues.
12 Team Performance League
Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3 | What’s Next?
1 | RB Peterson | RB Bush | QB Manning | Strong opening, needs to hit WR for next two rounds unless a running back falls. RB-RB-QB got me high scorers in this format. |
2 | RB Martin | QB Rodgers | WR Fitzgerald | No choice – have to go RB next but then take WR or RB as best available with #5 pick. |
3 | RB Charles | TE Graham | WR Green | Graham nice advantage but needs to go RB-WR next. |
4 | RB Richardson | WR Thomas | RB Gore | Solid opening but may lack firepower. Go for upside now. |
5 | RB Lynch | RB Jones-Drew | WR Johnson | Like WR next but consider RB if one falls to make sure MJD is healthy again. |
6 | RB Rice | WR Jones | RB Murray | Tough because you need to insure that Murray pick but have to wait on it. Look at RB here or in #5 and get WR in the other one. |
7 | RB Spiller | QB Brees | RB McFadden | Like Murray, McFadden is a big risk. Prudent to get a RB3 in the next two picks but need a WR for #4 or they’ll be too inconsistent if you wait. |
8 | RB Foster | RB Ridley | WR Cobb | Foster owners need Tate in maybe the 6th round but before then think WR-WR or WR-TE |
9 | WR Johnson | RB Jackson | WR Jackson | Trying to make a difference in late rounds is okay, but now gotta go RB next and maybe another one in the 5th. |
10 | RB Forte | WR Bryant | RB Sproles | This is a solid enough start – just need to hit upside players from here on out. Mostly a safe start. |
11 | RB McCoy | RB Johnson | WR White | Another safer start and solid on RB. Probably think about QB and TE sooner than later to find difference makers. |
12 | WR Marshall | RB Morris | RB Mathews | Could have gone RB-RB but Marshall is an elite. Will want to grab another RB in the next few picks in case Mathews is himself again this year. |
12 Team Performance League Plus Reception Point
Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3 | What’s Next?
1 | RB Peterson | QB Brees | WR Cobb | Taking Peterson frees up cherry picking. Should go RB-WR here before both hit lower tiers. |
2 | RB Martin | WR Johnson | RB Sproles | Standard ploy here that works well. Can go best available. |
3 | RB Charles | RB Morris | QB Rodgers | Not making enough use of reception points unless WR-WR is next. |
4 | WR Johnson | WR Thomas | RB Ridley | This can work in a RP league but going to need to go RB next or get lucky in round five. |
5 | RB Richardson | WR Green | RB McFadden | Taking McFadden means risk and upside. Have to decide if you want to throw caution to the wind and just take more risks or go RB in the next two rounds along with probably WR. |
6 | RB Rice | WR Fitzgerald | RB Jones-Drew | Can go best available. Picking from the middle means might want to consider QB and TE earlier to get at least a small advantage there. |
7 | RB Spiller | RB Bush | WR White | This group is nice in a RP league to be sure. WR probably next but can take best available. |
8 | RB Forte | RB Jackson | QB Manning | Must go WR-WR next up or risk losing out on those reception points. Taking anything else in the next two means have weak WR which hurts in a RP league. |
9 | WR Marshall | RB Johnson | RB Gore | Taking WR in round one did not hurt much and he got an elite guy. Cherry pick the next rounds for best available. |
10 | RB Foster | WR Jones | RB Murray | This team is all about upside but the risk is high with both RBs. Tate has to be taken soon but probably have to roll the dice here and just accept the risk. Might want to consider TE next too. |
11 | TE Graham | RB Lynch | WR Cruz | Nice start for a back-ender. Probably RB-WR next two picks but has some firepower already. |
12 | WR Bryant | RB McCoy | WR Welker | Next pick is next pick (literally). That should be a RB and the start is really solid for a 12th pick. This looks very nice for a 12th team. |
12 Team QB Heavy League
Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3 | What’s Next?
1 | RB Peterson | QB Brady | TE Graham | This would be an awesome start. RB-WR next but the league hates when the #1 guy does this. |
2 | RB Martin | WR Green | RB Bush | Went with a solid opening but has to go QB in the next two picks. Can probably wait until #5 since Brady is owned by the above owner. Would use #4 for WR. |
3 | RB Charles | WR Fitzgerald | WR Thomas | Evaluate next picks to go QB-RB or RB-QB. If there is 1 QB you really like, take him at #4 or risk the team above taking him. |
4 | QB Brees | RB Jackson | WR Johnson | Owning Brees is great in this league. RB-WR next two picks for a great start. |
5 | RB Richardson | WR Jones | QB Romo | This team has to go RB-WR next up for a solid start but could consider TE with #5 pick if RB came next. |
6 | RB Rice | QB Newton | RB Morris | Need WR or TE. Can go any direction really. |
7 | QB Rodgers | WR Bryant | RB Sproles | Rodgers a big bang in QB-heavy leagues. If not RB next up, then in #5 and take an upside guy like a rookie. |
8 | RB Spiller | QB Ryan | RB Jones-Drew | Backup MJD at the end of the draft but solid start. Shoot for upside WR and TE. |
9 | QB Manning | RB Johnson | RB Ridley | Should look WR-WR next for a nice balanced start. |
10 | RB Forte | WR Marshall | QB Luck | Luck may not be a big difference maker even in this format but at least now the team has strength at RB1 and WR1. Just RB and WR next and then cherry pick. |
11 | WR Johnson | RB McCoy | RB McFadden | McFadden big risk/reward so go RB again by round six. QB-WR should be the next picks. |
12 | RB Lynch | RB Foster | WR Cobb | Need to go WR-QB next but backup Tate by the sixth and hope no one else gets cute. Problem taking anyone who needs a handcuff at the back end of draft you have to either take him early or pray he makes it back to you. |
