Prediction: NYJ 16, BUF 23 (Line: BUF by 4.5)

UPDATE: This game moved to 7 PM EST in Detroit on Monday because of the inclement weather.

The Bills are 5-5 but have lost their last two games and yet their last win was when they left New York in week eight with a 43-23 victory. The Jets come off an improbable win over the Steelers and their bye.

The Jets finally managed to trap a team for only their second win and that stopped their eight game losing streak. The offense is still hampered by a rushing effort that seems to get worse as the season progresses and the switch to Michael Vick has really only served to reduce the number of turnovers while not increasing game scores. The win over the Steelers are big because it very likely will be their last for the rest of the year.

QUARTERBACK : Three games in as the starter and Michael Vick has only thrown for three touchdowns and topped out at 196 yards as a passer. Vick passed for 153 yards and two scores and one interception in the week eight loss to the Bills. That was the game where Geno Smith threw three interceptions in his first eight passes and was benched for the rest of the year.

RUNNING BACK : Chris Ivory ran for 43 yards and two touchdowns while Bilal Powell scored once on his four carries for 28 yards when the Bills visited the Jets in week eight. Ivory struggled in the last two weeks with only 73 combined rush yards from facing the Chiefs and Steelers. But Chris Johnson was given more work and did something with it. He ran for 69 yards on 11 carries and added 32 yards on two catches in Kansas City and ended with 35 total yards versus the Steelers. This unit is consistently less effective in road games.

WIDE RECEIVER : Eric Decker scored once with Vick at the helm in week nine when he posted nine catches for 63 yards in Kansas City. But he fell to only 24 yards on three catches versus the Steelers. Percy Harvin caught 11 passes for 129 yards in Kansas City but then was held to only 23 yards on three catches by the Steelers. This is a very unproductive group all year and the addition of Harvin had one good showing sandwiched by two games with fewer than 25 yard each. No other wideout here has ever mattered this season.

No receiver would have more than 40 yards versus the Bills last time.

TIGHT END : Vick rarely looks to Jace Amaro other than the one score he had in week ten. Otherwise he’s only totaled 79 yards over the three games with Vick at quarterback. Amaro would end with 51 yards on five receptions in the last meeting with the Bills.

MATCH TO THE DEFENSE: These teams just played three weeks ago. And this time it is on the road. Vick and the rest of the passing game was ineffective then and the Bills have been very good in the secondary against average or worse offenses. The Jets ran in three scores last time and those were three of only four rushing scores that the Bills have allowed. That won’t happen again in Buffalo. None of these players are that attractive this week.

Dropping a big loss to the Fins may be enough to prevent the Bills from even competing for a wildcard with upcoming games against the Broncos, Packers and Patriots.

QUARTERBACK : Kyle Orton injured his toe last Thursday in the loss to the Dolphins but claims he will be fine this week and will get ten days to heal. Orton is taking heat for only scoring once over the last two weeks while the Bills were getting beaten in low scoring games. But Orton passed for 238 yards and four touchdowns in New York this year. If he can get healthy, this may be as good as it gets for him for the rest of the year.

RUNNING BACK : Bryce Brown wasn’t very effective as a runner in the last three games but he caught six passes for 65 yards against the Chiefs and then seven receptions for 57 yards in Miami. Fred Jackson is expected to return and should resume the #1 duties in a rotation that now involves three backs. Anthony Dixon remains involved as a runner but Jackson has been the main receiver from the backfield so both he and Brown will have to share that load. Dixon ran for 44 yards and Brown was held to just 15 yards in the first meeting with the Jets.

WIDE RECEIVER : There isn’t much secret to the Bills offense. They tend to live and die by whatever Sammy Watkins accomplishes. The rookie scored five times this year and topped 100 yards in three games but only turned in around 30 yards in each of the last two losses. Robert Woods rarely tops 50 yards in any game and scored only twice all year. Watkins ended with three receptions for 157 yards and one score. Woods also scored on his three receptions for 50 yards.

TIGHT END : No fantasy value. Scott Chandler comes off a game with no catches for the second time this year.

Chandler ended with a touchdown on his one catch for 12 yards on the Jets this year.

MATCH TO THE DEFENSE: The Jets defense is no different three weeks later and this one is played at home. Their defensive line was good enough to shut down the run for the Bills and this time there may be three sharing the workload so no real improvement there. None of the backs are more than a marginal play against the Jets. Orton already threw for four scores last time and now is back in Buffalo so he remains at least a moderate start this week with upside for a very good game. Watkins is a must start against the team that so far gave him a career best game and even Woods should be considered this week.
