Prediction: DEN 27, KC 20 (Line: DEN by 2)

UPDATE: Julius Thomas has not practiced and is considered a game time decision. I am no including him in the projections because he’s more likely to not play and this is the late game on Sunday anyway.

This is a rematch of week two when the Broncos won 24-17 over the Chiefs. Denver is 8-3 but only 2-3 in road games while the 7-4 Chiefs are 4-2 in home games. This is considered a must win by both teams since a Denver win would all but guarantee the division and force the Chiefs to fight for a wildcard.

QB Mark Sanchez 300,2
RB C.J. Anderson 60 6-40,1
WR Emmanuel Sanders 6-100
WR Demaryius Thomas 6-70

The Broncos dumped kicker Brandon McManus and signed Connor Barth to get ready to kick in the snow next month. The Broncos have not fared well on the road this year, losing in Seattle, New England and St. Louis. But this week is against a very familiar rival that the Broncos already beat to start the year.

QUARTERBACK : Peyton Manning passed for 242 yards and three scores when the Chiefs visited in week two. He’s remained good for multiple scores in all but the Rams game when injuries changed up the starters. Manning should have almost all his players back for this game and the offense sports a better rushing attack than it had back in week two.

RUNNING BACK : C.J. Anderson took his turn being the latest Denver starter and ripped off 167 yards on 27 runs against the Dolphins with one score and four catches for 28 yards. The rushing touchdown was the first of his career and his total yards was the highest of any Denver back this year. Ronnie Hillman (foot) and Monte Ball (groin) remain out and Anderson is ready for his second start.

Ball ran for 60 yards and caught three passes for 29 yards against the Chiefs this year.

WIDE RECEIVER : Emmanuel Sanders ended with 108 yards on eight catches and Demaryius Thomas gained 62 yards on five catches with one score on the Chiefs this season. Since then both players have only become more prolific with Thomas notching seven straight 100 yard efforts and scoring nine times while Sanders also produced seven 100 yard games and scored seven times. Wes Welker hangs around but mostly to help track down the football on incompletions.

TIGHT END : Julius Thomas may play this week but that will be determined later in the week after his ankle has more treatments. Both Thomas (4-39) and Jacob Tamme (1-4) scored on the Chiefs this year .I will assume Thomas can play and update as warranted.

MATCH TO THE DEFENSE: The difference this go around is that it is played in Kansas City where the Chiefs have held most opponents to under 200 passing yards and no more than one passing score. No running back has scored in Kansas City though recently Marshawn Lynch rolled up 124 yards there. This is a tougher venue but there is never a reason to bench Manning, Anderson, Sanders or either Thomas.

KC vs DEN Rush Catch Pass
QB Alex Smith 20 250,1
RB Jamaal Charles 90,1 4-40
WR Jeremy Maclin 6-100
TE Travis Kelce 5-60,1
PK Cairo Santos 2 FG 2 XP

The loss to the Raiders hurt because it was a divisional game and because it was the Raiders. It also highlighted the one aspect of the Chiefs offense that is problematic – no wide receivers. At least never any that score. Once the Chiefs fall behind and have to abandon the run, the offense no longer moves as well and not being able to play catch up is certain doom come the playoffs in January.

QUARTERBACK : Alex Smith passed for 255 yards and no scores in Denver this year. He ran for 42 yards. He’s been all over the map with production since and turned in three more efforts without any passing scores. He has just one interception in the last nine games and makes few mistakes but he never passed for more than those 255 yards in any game this year.

RUNNING BACK : Jamaal Charles was injured in the first meeting with the Broncos but Knile Davis gained 79 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns. Davis would add six catches for 26 yards. Charles has been just as good as expected this year with 11 touchdowns on the season and roughly 100+ yards in every game.. His role as a receiver is down slightly from last year but he’s been a lock for a good game each week.

WIDE RECEIVER : After eleven games, still no wide receiver touchdowns. Not one. The worst ranked set of wideouts in the NFL is led by Dwayne Bowe but he’s been good for around 60 or 70 yards per game and the rest of the wideouts are barely worth half that. No wideout gained more than 40 yards on the Broncos this year. All combined, the Chiefs only average about 90 yards in total from all wide receiver catches combined.

TIGHT END : Travis Kelce ended with 81 yards on four catches in week two in Denver. He went on to score in the next three games and post as many as eight catches for 93 yards. But he has only one score in the last six games and has settled down to only around 40 yards in most games.

MATCH TO THE DEFENSE: The Broncos give up plenty of passing touchdowns but mostly to wide receivers which sort of do not exist here. The Broncos have been solid against running backs but Jamaal Charles should have a nice day here and even a monster game so long as the Chiefs do not fall way behind and stop running the ball. Charles is a must start and Kelce is worth a shot if you have no other better options. The Broncos are weak against the position and Kelce should be due for a good game.
